The origin of the name Shotokan

Shotokan was the name of the first official dojo created by Gichin Funakoshi, in 1936 in Mejiro, and destroyed in 1945 as a result of Allied bombing

Shoto- means “pine waves” (the movement of pine needles when the wind blows through them) and is the pseudonym Funakoshi used in his poetic and philosophical writings and letters to his students.

. Japanese kan means "house" or "hall". In honor of their senses, Funakoshi's students created a sign for reading shōtō-kan, which they placed above the entrance to the hall where Funakoshi taught. Gichin Funakoshi never gave the system its name, but rather called it Karate.

Features of Shotokan Karate

Shotoken training is usually divided into three parts: kihon (the basics), kata (forms or patterns of movements), and kumite (sparring).

The styles in kihon and kata are characterized by deep, long postures that provide stability, enable powerful movements, and strengthen the legs.

Shotokan is a dynamic art that develops powerful anaerobic techniques as well as developing speed.

In the beginning the player is keen to prove his strength instead of slow and more flowing motions. Those who progress to the brown and black belt level and develop a much smoother style that includes grappling, throwing and some cage-like jump techniques, which can be found in even the most basic kata.

Philosophy of Shotokan Karate

Funakshi laid down the twenty precepts of Karate (Niju kun) that form the foundations of this art, before some of his students founded the Japan Karate Association (JKA). Within these twenty principles, which draw heavily on bushido and Zen and herein lies the Shotokan philosophy.

The Principles of Shotokan Karate refer to the concepts of humility, respect, empathy, patience, and both inner and outer calm as Funakoshi's belief was that by practicing Karate and observing these 20 principles, the sport of Karate would improve their person.

The Dojo List lists five philosophical rules for training in a dojo: seeking perfection in character, loyalty, striving for excellence, respecting others, and refraining from violent behavior. These rules represent the fundamental principles of Karate.

Funakoshi said: “The ultimate goal of Karate is not victory or defeat, but the perfection of the character of the participant.”

 rating system

Ranking is used in Karate to refer to experience, in other words, seniority. As with many martial arts, Shotokan Karate uses a system of colored belts to indicate rank.

Most Shotokan schools use the kyū/dan system but have added other belt colors. The order of colors varies greatly from school to school, but kyu belts are known as colors that in some schools get darker as the student approaches the dan level.

Dan level belts are always black, as well as some schools use stripes to denote the various ranks of the black belt. It is worth noting that Funakshi never conferred himself a rank higher than Godan (fifth black belt).

karate kata

Kata is often described as a series of organized karate moves in a pre-arranged battle against imaginary opponents. The kata consists of kicks, punches, strikes and blocks. Body movement in various kata includes stepping, twisting, turning, lowering, and jumping.

Several groups introduced the original Shotokan kata in the Funakoshi Karate-do Kyohan.

Shotokan

Shotokan  (松濤館流,  Shōtōkan-ryū ) is the most powerful martial art. It is a type of karate and is the most widespread type in the world. Founder Gichin Funakoshi Features: Integration of all Chinese and Okinawan games. Explosive strikes: that is, I can hit you at a certain point, and the member in which I hit you will go numb. Gathering energy in one area: I can collect this energy in my feet and break the wall of a wooden room. Bend joints and break bones, such as: Aikido. What distinguishes Shotokan players is that they are more loyal to their game than players in other sports, and the evidence is that its players went to large areas of the earth to spread it, and it is similar to Kung Fu in strength, if it does not overwhelm it... And what is distinguished in it is that many screams: Sa, Kia, and the most beautiful thing is that it is practiced by both sexes

Other types of karate have branched out from it, such as Koguryo, Odoryu, Shitorio, Shidokan, and Kyokushin. The proof is that it is the strongest type of karate that most of the open fighting tournaments were won by karate players. The island of Okinawa in Japan merged it and then Funakoshi played the Chinese arts and then the Okinawan and combined them together to become one art called Shoto Karate, and the weak point of the Shotokan was the lack of rigidity in the body. The goal of his invention: defending the Japanese against the samurai and the beauty in it. He invented a special way to defeat the players of earthly conflict sports such as: Judo, Jujutsu and Aikido. The integration of these arts was wise and not the shroud of Jet Kendo. As for this was the beginning, this is the truth: Documents indicate that Karate began from India about 5000 years ago, where there were not many multiple ways of self-defense and the only method at that time was the art of punching by fist.

This method was called in India (Fajramushti), which means (the fist), and he adds that the art of Karate began in India when a wealthy Indian Maharaja thought of creating a method for self-defense without resorting to the use of traditional weapons known at the time. He watched the animals in his environment and looked at them precisely when it uses its members to defend itself,It became clear to him the usefulness of these automatic movements performed by animals as a means of self-defense, and the Maharaja thought about the possibility of quoting these natural movements and applying them to humans. He points out that the (Buddhist Dharma), the Indian monk, is the first man to transfer the art of self-defense to China during the fourth century AD during the rule of the dynasty of King (Su Ng) King of China. China became the most powerful country with authority and influence over the country in the sixth century AD When the martial arts multiplied, each of them had a specific name, and he took (Bozi Darma) to develop the art of self-defense and devised movements that take a new form of exercise. And he began to teach his students this art in the famous (Shaolin Temple)..

In the year 1000 AD, one of the Chinese excelled in this art, he was called (Shochoa), and he took (Shochoa) interested in developing this art and began teaching his students to acquire the physical strength required to carry out a strict system of self-control, which was part of their religious belief and the superiority of this art to some people over me The concept of Buddhist creed because of its inclusion of features in educating the body, mind and spirit.

And that in the seventeenth century AD, the art of self-defense moved from China to the Okinawa Islands through the clergy, warriors, traders and immigrants at that time, and some Okinawans at that time used self-defense movements in celebrations through rhythmic dances and these dances developed and introduced methods Kicking and punching became used as a method of self-defense. Historical documents indicate that in 1609 AD, Japan invaded the Okinawa Islands, eliminating their independence and stripping the island’s inhabitants of weapons . Anyone carrying weapons in Okinawa was considered a criminal. The Kagoshima governor’s ban on the use of weapons led to the emergence of effective self-defense methods, and the Okinawans began to practice the art of defense Self-defense instead of weapons from which the people were stripped and called the art of self-defense in the islands at this time (special weapon) or (empty hand), and three secret schools were opened in  Okinawa To teach combat and self-defense, and it was based in three main cities (Shuri, Naha, Tomari), and the instructions for art were transmitted orally and practically. The schools and when they were able to do so, they burned the schools and killed both the students and teachers to eliminate this weapon once and for all. Some teachers and students managed to escape and escape from this massacre, some of them immigrated to several countries, and some of them stayed on the island in disguise.

The basis of our conversation is Mr. Funakoshi Gethen. He is from  Okinawa  . He was born in 1866 AD. He immigrated to Japan and established a school to teach the art of self-defense and called it (Karate) in the Japanese language, meaning the art of the empty hand, and the formation of several good players in this art. Koshi wanted to spread his new style in Japan, and it emerged in 1917, so he went to Professor (Gyogorokano) at Kodokan University, who is the founder of Judo at that time. Everyone. The Japanese Ministry of Education invited Mr. Funakoshi to present a presentation in front of the officials. The show succeeded and became an art of value in Japan, as it was included in the physical education curricula in Japanese schools.
